The Story of Millys

Just as trout and fishing are ingrained in the story of Doornkop Fish & Wildlife Reserve, so too, is it ingrained in the story of Millys. Over decades, South Africans have come to know and love places which resonate with their own beliefs and values; of family, friendship and good times. An integral part of our culture, mealtimes and tales of (fishing) heroism go hand-in-hand and one of our favourite times to dust off our storybooks is while enjoying a delicious breakfast or lunch, en-route to our favourite home-away-from-home.

Millys Complex is located along the N4, just outside of eNtokozweni, Mpumalanga, and offers a pit-stop for weary travellers. The front of the building looks onto the highway with ample parking for visitors, while the accommodations and Restaurant deck sit perched on a freshwater dam, with countryside stretching beyond. The atmosphere is cosy, typical of country hospitality and it’s always service with a smile, regardless of if you’re browsing the infinite treats at the Farm Stall or enjoying a hearty lunch in the Restaurant.

The Country Stall is the heart of Millys story. Back in 1974, Milly and Wimcar began selling rainbow trout from their humble stall; soon, however, word spread of their quality product, as South Africans queued to collect the fresh fish. By 1979, the current premises had been purchased and the complex began to grow into what it is now, though the Farm Stall remains. Here, guests are treated with a number of sticky jams and marmalades, the ever-famous Mediterranean chutney and a number of baked goodies. The smell of freshly baked bread and homely rusks waft out from the bakery and, over peak periods, baskets of trout products are escorted out of the doors and into family vehicles.

At the centre of Millys Complex is the Restaurant, serving up delicious meals made with Millys family recipes. Guests are treated to hearty portions of bacon and eggs with crispy chips for breakfast, savoury pancakes and moreish burgers. The star of the show, however, and most South Africans are likely to agree, is Millys famous trout pie. Farm-grown trout and a secret recipe are transformed into flaky, golden pockets – an absolute treat! Order a slice and a refreshing beverage and take a break from the busy roads… you are, after all, on holiday.

The story of Millys is undoubtedly a tale which resonates with many of us, of hard work, dedication and family heritage. This unassuming location has morphed into a mini village, where children watch the fish swim about lazily from the deck, families enjoy each other’s company, while dining on scrumptious meals and couples are seen browsing the stalls of gifts, jams and trout products – a seemingly small, yet important part of the South African holiday experience, made that much more special by an unassuming slice of trout pie.
