Experience ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation waking to the sounds of birds chirping happily and fluttering on the breeze outside. Explore the Reserve and breathe in the fresh air perfumed with fresh cut grass and the subtle scent of wildlife roaming in the distance. Escape the worries of the city with a calming morning along the banks of a dam; casting a line and soaking up the incredible feeling of that moment, undisturbed. Enjoy a sundowner alongside a crackling fire, sharing stories and memories of days spent outdoors at Doornkop.
Green grass creeps right to the edge where it is suddenly engulfed by the deep, cool waters of one of the ten dams at Doornkop Fish & Wildlife Reserve. The grass balds below the waters' surface and morphs into sand, plunging into the depths where, lying in wait, a hover of trout settles in the shadows. Up at the surface, rays of sunshine, on what is set to be a warm day ahead, start beating down on the water. The playful swish of a dry fly in motion breaks the silence as it is cast out, landing on the water and creating soft ripples which emanate outwards. Within moments the trout below are stirred and the battle of the catch commences.
Fly fishing at Doornkop is special and the Reserve provides ample space and a beautiful setting to avid fishing enthusiasts, as well as beginners. There are eight well-stocked trout dams on the property, which are kept to high standards year-round and offer a quality fly fishing experience.
All fisherfolk are required to possess the necessary permits, which can be acquired from Reception. The Fly Shop stocks basic fly fishing equipment and fishing rods can be hired from Reception.
R250 per fishing permit | Valid for seven days for all dams
R350 weekend rod hire (Fri - Mon) | R550 full week rod hire (Fri - Fri)
The Swartspruit River borders the western perimeter of Doornkop Fish & Wildlife Reserve, while the Komati River bends away from the Resort in a northernly fashion – both rivers are home to the indigenous yellowfish species.
Yellowfish are a delicate species and are easily influenced by pollutants and habitat destruction. While they are not threatened, it is our responsibility to maintain a healthy eco-system of this fish species on the Reserve for all generations of fisherfolk, to enjoy in the years to come. For the purpose of preserving Yellowfish, strictly catch and release fishing is permitted along the Swartspruit and Komati.
In the best interest of our guests, fishing enthusiasts and Doornkop Fish & Wildlife Reserve, fishing rules and regulations have been implemented and must be adhered to at all times.
Please assist in maintaining Doornkop’s fishing facilities so that others may enjoy the experience after you.

Our visit to Doornkop Fish and Wildlife Reserve was everything and more! The views from our bedrooms were spectacular, and the sound of water from the river in the mornings and evenings was amazing. We tried identifying the birds and animals from the balcony area while enjoying coffee and chatting. The fireplace made our conversations and lounging very cosy. Our hike was a bit of a challenge, however, the waterfall was a great reward. We are currently planning our summer visit.
